When people design their own rings, they are looking for engagement rings that match their personality and are a little more unique than the grossly overdone diamond solitaire, pave and three stone engagement rings of modern day. In response to the ever-changing needs of the modern woman, vintage rings are an exceptionally popular choice to use as a basis when you want to design your own engagement ring.
There are many websites that let you design your own engagement ring by choosing individual features. Unfortunately, not many of them give information about antique and vintage engagement ring eras, so it us up to you, the consumer to do your homework and learn about them on your own. When you make the decision to design your own engagement ring, you must choose the appropriate era to match your future fiancés character and personal style.
Choosing to design your own engagement ring should be a fun and exhilarating experience, but before you start, you must be careful to narrow down what era your ring should resemble.
If you choose to design your own engagement ring in fashion with the Edwardian era (1901-1915), you would be designing a ring that features platinum and white Gold Bands with filigree and scrollwork details. In accordance with this era, when you design your own ring, make sure to include princess cut and emerald cut center stones when selecting solitaire, three-stone or multiple stone arrangements. In addition, amethysts and pearls were often used as complimentary stones.
To design your own Art Deco engagement ring (1920’s) would be simple as long as you followed the style of intricate and angular patterns similar to architectural construction. We have all heard of the roaring 20s and as such, the Art Deco fashion period captured the spirit of this bold age. When you design your own engagement ring in art deco fashion, be sure to include geometric shapes, contrasting materials and large colorful cluster settings. Another popular trend of this time was to mix and match gemstones with diamonds. Many engagement rings featured cushion cut, emerald cut and Asscher cut diamonds.
If you want to design your own engagement ring, but are on a budget; fashioning your ring after the 1930s may be the perfect solution. In the 1930’s, the Great Depression had an influence on al most all areas of life, including engagement rings. Engagement rings of this time were much more modest than their art deco counterparts. The geometric patterns of the previous era were still used, but the bands were narrower and stones were smaller. To design your own engagement ring imitative of this era would mean less financial obligation because both the stones and the bands were more delicate.
When choosing to design your engagement ring after the trend of the 1940s, be aware that the designs were quite a bit less elaborate than the Art Deco and early 1900 styles that came before. This was most likely in response to the onset of World War II. Solitaire round brilliant cut diamonds, sometimes flanked by baguettes or other small cut diamonds, were prevalent during the 1940s. Also, when you design your own engagement ring, be sure to choose either platinum or white gold.
To design your engagement ring in the style of the mid 1940s to the 1950s you would have to become familiar with the style preferences of Hollywood starlets. Jewels were big and bold and a variety of gold alloys in various colors were utilized, due to the scarcity of platinum. Semi-precious stones, such as aquamarine and garnet, were also used.
No matter which era you prefer to design your own engagement ring after, make sure you choose one which is an accurate representation your future fiancés personality: if she would appreciate a more glamorous ring, 20’s or 50’s is the way to go. If she would prefer something sleeker, 30’s or 40’s is best. Do some research to find your idyllic model and print out pictures to help you remember when the time comes to sit down and design your own engagement ring.
