Claddagh rings first appeared during the 17th century during the reign of Queen Mary II. The renowned goldsmith called Richard Joyes, who resided in the small fishing village of Claddagh, originally crafted the Unique Design that eventually became part of the Irish heritage. These traditional Irish rings are very popular, particularly amongst those of Irish descent, and have been given as gifts of friendship, love, loyalty and fidelity for many years – “let love and friendship reign” is the ring’s well fitting motto. The Claddagh ring is easily recognised by its striking and unmistakeable design of two hands clasping a heart, surmounted by a crown – the heart is said to symbolise love, the hands are said to symbolise friendship and the crown is thought to symbolise loyalty.
How to wear Claddagh Rings
The Claddagh ring can be worn in several ways to indicate the wearer’s availability. If the ring is worn on the right hand with the crown turned inward, it suggests that the wearer is available and has not yet found true love. If the ring is worn on the same hand with the crown turned outward, then it suggests that the wearer is perhaps in a relationship but not yet married. If, on the other hand, the ring is worn on the left hand with the crown turned outward, it informs any potential suitors that the wearer’s heart is well and truly spoken for.
