Go All Out and Get a Complete Wedding Ring Set

Some couples are perfectly content choosing an engagement ring, the woman’s wedding ring, and the man’s wedding ring completely separately and independent. Sometimes, the female will go one step further and find a wedding ring that the engagement ring nests in, so the two look like one ring when worn together. To take it all the way, go as a couple and select a Matching Set of wedding rings and engagement ring at the same time.

This is not an easy venture. Trying to suit two individual tastes in jewelry and throwing an engagement ring in on top of it all (which will have its own set of requirements and specifications) can lead to resentment as much as it can unity. Make sure you are both clearly on board with this before you start, or somebody’s feelings will get hurt.

It will help if you can sit down in advance of heading out to the jewelry store and make a list of yeses, no’s, maybes, and “doesn’t matter’s”. Write down all of the essentials of a wedding set you can think of, like type of metal (gold, silver, platinum, titanium, or stainless), metal color (yellow, white, rose, pink, green, gray, and black), and the different patterns that can be carved into rings (none or polished, checkerboards, flowers, vines, hearts, ribbons, etc). Then each of you take a copy of the list and select one of the four options above for each choice in each category. Then, compare notes. If none of your answers are alike at all, you might want to reconsider Matching Wedding rings. But usually there are a couple of things you will both like, so start with those.

When you look at wedding ring sets, look at the engagement rings first and settle on it before moving on. The engagement ring will be the most intricate of the three rings, so it’s most important to get it right. Once the engagement ring is nailed down, then start looking at wedding sets to match the engagement ring. If the woman wants her wedding band to nestle into the engagement ring, push all other sets aside and look only at those. They will most-likely be narrower bands, so the simpler you’re both willing to go, the better.

Men’s bands tend to be made of a less expensive but harder material so they don’t get distorted when they’re worn. So having the woman insist on 18k gold matching wedding rings will not be a smart idea. Usually, when you find a set you like, you’ll discover that the woman’s ring is 14k or 18k gold (or perhaps platinum), while the man’s is 10k or 12k.

Starting off your engagement and life together by selecting a matching wedding set can really test a couple’s fortitude. This will be one of your first lessons in serious compromise, and may determine how well-suited you really are for each other. But when you get it right, you have the satisfaction of knowing you chose your set together, and it will be your first real “teamwork” experience.
